The amount of sea ice around Antarctica is at an exceptionally low level. Normally, the annual maximum of ice is reached in mid-September, but according to NSIDC satellite data, the current amount of water in solid aggregate state is much lower than previous figures. This signals alarming consequences for our planet.
The sea ice level set a record minimum and since then remains significantly below the average value. Although the growth of ice mass formation accelerated in early September, it has now slowed down again and the Antarctic now presents an unusually bare picture for this time of the year.
